Challenge The National Children’s Cancer Society (NCCS) is one of the nation’s largest financial aid organizations for children with cancer. Unlike other cancer charities, its center of activity shifted away from an emphasis on treatment research and access to a focus on financial and in-kind assistance, advocacy, support services and education. In its 20th year of existence, NCCS undertook a strategic planning initiative with board members and key staff to chart a new course of action that would enhance its programming and operations. Action Vector, facilitated a comprehensive strategic planning process designed to help NCCS adjust to an ever-changing set of internal realities and external demands. Members of NCCS’ executive leadership team and board planning committee met seven times to evaluate the organization’s overall function and to develop new long-term programming directives. With Vector’s guidance, planning participants created a plan that when fully implemented would improve NCCS’ execution of its mission; inform its critical operations and programming decisions; guide its resource allocations; and deepen its positive community impact. Results In July 2008, NCCS concluded its work on its 2008-2011 strategic plan. Planning participants spent more than 250 labor hours considering the organization’s existing state of affairs, new vision of success, strategic issues and action plans. Since the summer, staff members have begun executing plan components that will enhance NCCS’ portfolio of services; expand its development program; and refine its organizational structure. |
